Gum Disease

Did you know that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects half of American adults? This condition is prevalent in Gainesville, FL and is caused by bacteria that attack the tissues surrounding the teeth. The initial stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible with proper treatment.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, leading to bone loss around the teeth. As the bone tissue deteriorates, the gums detach from the teeth, forming pockets that create an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Without intervention, the infection worsens, causing loose teeth that may eventually fall out. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 years old in Gainesville.

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease in Gainesville. Some people may not experience any symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage. However, there are several indications to watch out for:

  • Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it is a warning sign of gum disease. It’s crucial to seek dental care promptly in Gainesville.
  • Bad breath: Plaque buildup between the teeth can result in bacteria that produce sulfur compounds, leading to persistent bad breath.
  • Redness, puffiness, or swelling of the gums: Inflammation is typically an early visible sign of infection, and our Gainesville dental experts can provide the necessary treatment.
  • Receding gums: If you notice that your teeth appear longer than before, it may be due to gum tissue recession, which exposes the tooth roots.
  • Sensitivity: Gum recession can cause sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Our dental team in Gainesville can help alleviate this discomfort.
  • Loose teeth: As gum disease progresses and leads to bone loss, the teeth can become loose Gainesville residents can rely on our dental professionals for appropriate treatment.

Fortunately, gum disease in Gainesville can be managed, although it cannot be fully reversed once it has advanced beyond gingivitis. Dentists in Gainesville, FL have various techniques to control and prevent further progression of the disease. Scaling, root planing, or debridement are cleaning techniques that remove plaque and bacteria beneath the gum line. In some cases, antibiotics or laser therapy may be recommended to eliminate the infection. Your general dentist may also refer you to a periodontist, a gum specialist, to explore surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

To prevent gum disease in Gainesville, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing diligently every day. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings every 3 to 6 months are crucial for maintaining periodontal health. These appointments allow our team to reach areas that may be difficult to clean with a toothbrush and floss alone.

If you suspect gum disease and reside in Gainesville, it is important to seek clinical treatment to address the infection. Contact Coast Dental Newberry Square today at (352) 332-4180 to schedule an appointment with our experienced team of dentists in Gainesville.

I went to Coastal for the first time ever and they are super nice people. They made sure it was safe for me to do any x rays, since I am currently pregnant. They speak Spanish too, so if English isn’t your preferred language they got you. They took care of me very well and work with me, and showed me that I was elegible for a payment plan which is so much easier for me. But definitely recommend 💯

I am a first-time patient of Coast Dental, I moved here from a different state, and after using one dentist's office my entire life I found myself needing a general cleaning. I live about 30 minutes away from this office but, scheduled my appointments at this location due to the office in my city being booked up for many months in advance. The first exam will just be a general exam and x-rays, so if you are a first-time patient like myself be prepared to come back another day for the cleaning. My first appointment went somewhat smoothly, the hygienist and dental assistant were both very nice and tried their best to keep everything running smoothly as there was no doctor in that location, you only spoke to one virtually and they reviewed the charts and X-rays. I spent a good amount of time waiting for the hygienist after my X-rays were completed due to technology issues and a patient before me giving them a hard time. I don't have dental insurance so I paid out of pocket for everything, it was about $350 for the X-rays and exam for my first visit. On my next visit a few days later for my prophy cleaning it was roughly $160 for the cleaning plus another $70 for the concentrated fluoride varnish. Overall I was happy with my visit here, however, I definitely recommend having dental insurance.

Absolutely wonder experience at the dentist. Dentist Erika (can't remember her last name) but she is so sweet and kind. She took the time to educate me every visit and helped me with choosing the proper treatment plan to help me improve my dental health. She also helped me with figuring out my financial plan to afford the treatment. She speaks Spanish and I highly recommend her services.
