Common Problems in Children
There are many reasons why a child may need braces. Many of the problems are inherited, such as overbites, crowding issues, spacing problems, or teeth that did not come in properly. Other times, the problems may be the result of thumb sucking or an injury to the mouth. Braces and other types of orthodontic treatment can also help correct problems with jaw growth.
The American Association recommends children visit an orthodontist by age 7 to identify any problems with jaw growth or tooth eruption.

Many children start braces between the ages of 11 and 13, when most of their permanent teeth have come in.
