Gum Disease

Did you know that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects half of American adults? This condition is prevalent in Ormond Beach, FL and is caused by bacteria that attack the tissues surrounding the teeth. The initial stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible with proper treatment.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, leading to bone loss around the teeth. As the bone tissue deteriorates, the gums detach from the teeth, forming pockets that create an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Without intervention, the infection worsens, causing loose teeth that may eventually fall out. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 years old in Ormond Beach.

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease in Ormond Beach. Some people may not experience any symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage. However, there are several indications to watch out for:

  • Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it is a warning sign of gum disease. It’s crucial to seek dental care promptly in Ormond Beach.
  • Bad breath: Plaque buildup between the teeth can result in bacteria that produce sulfur compounds, leading to persistent bad breath.
  • Redness, puffiness, or swelling of the gums: Inflammation is typically an early visible sign of infection, and our Ormond Beach dental experts can provide the necessary treatment.
  • Receding gums: If you notice that your teeth appear longer than before, it may be due to gum tissue recession, which exposes the tooth roots.
  • Sensitivity: Gum recession can cause sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Our dental team in Ormond Beach can help alleviate this discomfort.
  • Loose teeth: As gum disease progresses and leads to bone loss, the teeth can become loose Ormond Beach residents can rely on our dental professionals for appropriate treatment.

Fortunately, gum disease in Ormond Beach can be managed, although it cannot be fully reversed once it has advanced beyond gingivitis. Dentists in Ormond Beach, FL have various techniques to control and prevent further progression of the disease. Scaling, root planing, or debridement are cleaning techniques that remove plaque and bacteria beneath the gum line. In some cases, antibiotics or laser therapy may be recommended to eliminate the infection. Your general dentist may also refer you to a periodontist, a gum specialist, to explore surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

To prevent gum disease in Ormond Beach, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing diligently every day. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings every 3 to 6 months are crucial for maintaining periodontal health. These appointments allow our team to reach areas that may be difficult to clean with a toothbrush and floss alone.

I had a periodontal scaling and root cleaning at Coast Dental in Ormond Beach. My experience with the Ormond Beach office in particular, from the initial consultation through the actual deep cleaning, was definitely a positive one. The hygienist in that office did a great job and made sure I was comfortable throughout the whole procedure. I would definitely recommend making the trip to Ormond Beach if you are within a reasonable distance from their location.

Dr Windom did a great job with my exts and my assistant did awesome with the color match and impressions. Only critique of the office is the front desk and call center needs much improvement on scheduling and rescheduling of appointments. They should never be calling a patient less than an hour before their appointment to cancel because their appliance is not in yet. This should be done the day before prior to confirming and this was not the first time they cancelled me without notice either. It's just frustrating because it's a great office other than that.

The dentist is truly the nicest man & completely professional. Nothing hurt. At all. Crazy. And the assistants are as nice & talented as the doctor. The front desk - same. So nice. Take their time with you. So professional. In this office, the saying; ‘Birds of a feather flock together’ is the epitome of truth!
