Gum Disease

Did you know that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects half of American adults? This condition is prevalent in Port St Lucie, FL and is caused by bacteria that attack the tissues surrounding the teeth. The initial stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible with proper treatment.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, leading to bone loss around the teeth. As the bone tissue deteriorates, the gums detach from the teeth, forming pockets that create an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Without intervention, the infection worsens, causing loose teeth that may eventually fall out. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 years old in Port St Lucie.

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease in Port St Lucie. Some people may not experience any symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage. However, there are several indications to watch out for:

  • Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it is a warning sign of gum disease. It’s crucial to seek dental care promptly in Port St Lucie.
  • Bad breath: Plaque buildup between the teeth can result in bacteria that produce sulfur compounds, leading to persistent bad breath.
  • Redness, puffiness, or swelling of the gums: Inflammation is typically an early visible sign of infection, and our Port St Lucie dental experts can provide the necessary treatment.
  • Receding gums: If you notice that your teeth appear longer than before, it may be due to gum tissue recession, which exposes the tooth roots.
  • Sensitivity: Gum recession can cause sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Our dental team in Port St Lucie can help alleviate this discomfort.
  • Loose teeth: As gum disease progresses and leads to bone loss, the teeth can become loose Port St Lucie residents can rely on our dental professionals for appropriate treatment.

Fortunately, gum disease in Port St Lucie can be managed, although it cannot be fully reversed once it has advanced beyond gingivitis. Dentists in Port St Lucie, FL have various techniques to control and prevent further progression of the disease. Scaling, root planing, or debridement are cleaning techniques that remove plaque and bacteria beneath the gum line. In some cases, antibiotics or laser therapy may be recommended to eliminate the infection. Your general dentist may also refer you to a periodontist, a gum specialist, to explore surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

To prevent gum disease in Port St Lucie, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing diligently every day. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings every 3 to 6 months are crucial for maintaining periodontal health. These appointments allow our team to reach areas that may be difficult to clean with a toothbrush and floss alone.

If you suspect gum disease and reside in Port St Lucie, it is important to seek clinical treatment to address the infection. Contact Coast Dental St. Lucie West today at (772) 343-0179 to schedule an appointment with our experienced team of dentists in Port St Lucie.

I’ve been coming to Coast Dental since 2020 and I have always had very thorough cleanings. The dental assistants and staff are friendly and very helpful. They always take the time to educate and have so much patience with me when I ask all my questions. Lesly and Dr Gomez are super friendly and make my appointment very enjoyable. I don’t know how many other people can say that when they go to the dentist but you won’t be disappointed if you come here!

I’m never going to another dental office for as long as coast dental exists. I had an appointment for myself and my mom, trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone considering my busy schedule. I had to take my 2y/o with us since I didn’t have someone to watch him. He decided that it was the day to drive me crazy and started throwing a tantrum, wouldn’t stop crying. I told them to cancel my appointment and just keep my mom’s. The office manager and one the hygienist, offered to take my son so I can get my things done. I was a little skeptical cz I don’t like to hand my son to people I don’t know. He went to the lady with no problem and sit quietly to play the whole time. She was so sweet and caring with him. It’s the sweetest thing I’ve seen someone in a doctor office do. I manage a Medical office myself, I’ve help parents with kids, giving them candies but that’s about it. Thank you so much for your kindness.

I was very nervous about going to a dentist. My 1st visit there was amazing. Dr. Gomez was so friendly and very professional. My 2nd visit where I had 5 extractions was the best experience I've ever had with a dentist. Dr. Gomez and his assistant were very pleasant and very professional. I will be continuing my dental work here.
