Gum Disease

Did you know that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects half of American adults? This condition is prevalent in Suwanee, GA and is caused by bacteria that attack the tissues surrounding the teeth. The initial stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible with proper treatment.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, leading to bone loss around the teeth. As the bone tissue deteriorates, the gums detach from the teeth, forming pockets that create an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Without intervention, the infection worsens, causing loose teeth that may eventually fall out. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 years old in Suwanee.

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease in Suwanee. Some people may not experience any symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage. However, there are several indications to watch out for:

  • Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it is a warning sign of gum disease. It’s crucial to seek dental care promptly in Suwanee.
  • Bad breath: Plaque buildup between the teeth can result in bacteria that produce sulfur compounds, leading to persistent bad breath.
  • Redness, puffiness, or swelling of the gums: Inflammation is typically an early visible sign of infection, and our Suwanee dental experts can provide the necessary treatment.
  • Receding gums: If you notice that your teeth appear longer than before, it may be due to gum tissue recession, which exposes the tooth roots.
  • Sensitivity: Gum recession can cause sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Our dental team in Suwanee can help alleviate this discomfort.
  • Loose teeth: As gum disease progresses and leads to bone loss, the teeth can become loose Suwanee residents can rely on our dental professionals for appropriate treatment.

Fortunately, gum disease in Suwanee can be managed, although it cannot be fully reversed once it has advanced beyond gingivitis. Dentists in Suwanee, GA have various techniques to control and prevent further progression of the disease. Scaling, root planing, or debridement are cleaning techniques that remove plaque and bacteria beneath the gum line. In some cases, antibiotics or laser therapy may be recommended to eliminate the infection. Your general dentist may also refer you to a periodontist, a gum specialist, to explore surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

To prevent gum disease in Suwanee, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing diligently every day. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings every 3 to 6 months are crucial for maintaining periodontal health. These appointments allow our team to reach areas that may be difficult to clean with a toothbrush and floss alone.

If you suspect gum disease and reside in Suwanee, it is important to seek clinical treatment to address the infection. Contact Coast Dental Suwanee today at (678) 482-2197 to schedule an appointment with our experienced team of dentists in Suwanee.

I had a very pleasant experience at Coastal Dental. Everyone was kind and helpful. It was my first visit and I did plan to be there longer than normal w/ X-rays, Doctor exam and Hygienist exam. However, I waited way longer to be seen then I expected, BUT...as soon as Dr. Park came in to do my initial exam, she apologized for my long wait and appreciated my patience...it had been a busy morning. I really appreciated my wait time did not go unrecognized and that is great customer service in book. Kenya the Hygienist was nice and thorough and I would have been able to get my cleaning the same day but one of her appointments ran long. I was given my treatment options which included what my insurance covered or discounted and I made my cleaning for next week. I look forward to continue getting my dental services here.

Overall a great experience at Coast Dental Suwanee. The office was a bit outdated and dusty but the treatment and care received was excellent (hence why only 4 stars). It always costs me a pretty penny when I go in for my biannual cleanings/checkups because they have specific treatment plans, such as periodontal treatments, that you must adhere to, to be serviced by them. A little different than what I am used to but it is certainly in the patients best interest. Received great education on the current health of my teeth and how to preserve them given my treatment needs. My mouth feels amazing and I know what to expect for the next visit. I would recommend.
