Gum Disease

Did you know that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects half of American adults? This condition is prevalent in Winter Springs, FL and is caused by bacteria that attack the tissues surrounding the teeth. The initial stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible with proper treatment.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, leading to bone loss around the teeth. As the bone tissue deteriorates, the gums detach from the teeth, forming pockets that create an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Without intervention, the infection worsens, causing loose teeth that may eventually fall out. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 years old in Winter Springs.

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease in Winter Springs. Some people may not experience any symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage. However, there are several indications to watch out for:

  • Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it is a warning sign of gum disease. It’s crucial to seek dental care promptly in Winter Springs.
  • Bad breath: Plaque buildup between the teeth can result in bacteria that produce sulfur compounds, leading to persistent bad breath.
  • Redness, puffiness, or swelling of the gums: Inflammation is typically an early visible sign of infection, and our Winter Springs dental experts can provide the necessary treatment.
  • Receding gums: If you notice that your teeth appear longer than before, it may be due to gum tissue recession, which exposes the tooth roots.
  • Sensitivity: Gum recession can cause sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Our dental team in Winter Springs can help alleviate this discomfort.
  • Loose teeth: As gum disease progresses and leads to bone loss, the teeth can become loose Winter Springs residents can rely on our dental professionals for appropriate treatment.

Fortunately, gum disease in Winter Springs can be managed, although it cannot be fully reversed once it has advanced beyond gingivitis. Dentists in Winter Springs, FL have various techniques to control and prevent further progression of the disease. Scaling, root planing, or debridement are cleaning techniques that remove plaque and bacteria beneath the gum line. In some cases, antibiotics or laser therapy may be recommended to eliminate the infection. Your general dentist may also refer you to a periodontist, a gum specialist, to explore surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

To prevent gum disease in Winter Springs, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing diligently every day. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings every 3 to 6 months are crucial for maintaining periodontal health. These appointments allow our team to reach areas that may be difficult to clean with a toothbrush and floss alone.

If you suspect gum disease and reside in Winter Springs, it is important to seek clinical treatment to address the infection. Contact Coast Dental Tuscawilla today at (407) 696-4474 to schedule an appointment with our experienced team of dentists in Winter Springs.
