Gum Disease

Did you know that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects half of American adults? This condition is prevalent in Sarasota, FL and is caused by bacteria that attack the tissues surrounding the teeth. The initial stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible with proper treatment.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, leading to bone loss around the teeth. As the bone tissue deteriorates, the gums detach from the teeth, forming pockets that create an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Without intervention, the infection worsens, causing loose teeth that may eventually fall out. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 years old in Sarasota.

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease in Sarasota. Some people may not experience any symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage. However, there are several indications to watch out for:

  • Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it is a warning sign of gum disease. It’s crucial to seek dental care promptly in Sarasota.
  • Bad breath: Plaque buildup between the teeth can result in bacteria that produce sulfur compounds, leading to persistent bad breath.
  • Redness, puffiness, or swelling of the gums: Inflammation is typically an early visible sign of infection, and our Sarasota dental experts can provide the necessary treatment.
  • Receding gums: If you notice that your teeth appear longer than before, it may be due to gum tissue recession, which exposes the tooth roots.
  • Sensitivity: Gum recession can cause sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Our dental team in Sarasota can help alleviate this discomfort.
  • Loose teeth: As gum disease progresses and leads to bone loss, the teeth can become loose Sarasota residents can rely on our dental professionals for appropriate treatment.

Fortunately, gum disease in Sarasota can be managed, although it cannot be fully reversed once it has advanced beyond gingivitis. Dentists in Sarasota, FL have various techniques to control and prevent further progression of the disease. Scaling, root planing, or debridement are cleaning techniques that remove plaque and bacteria beneath the gum line. In some cases, antibiotics or laser therapy may be recommended to eliminate the infection. Your general dentist may also refer you to a periodontist, a gum specialist, to explore surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

To prevent gum disease in Sarasota, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing diligently every day. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings every 3 to 6 months are crucial for maintaining periodontal health. These appointments allow our team to reach areas that may be difficult to clean with a toothbrush and floss alone.

If you suspect gum disease and reside in Sarasota, it is important to seek clinical treatment to address the infection. Contact Coast Dental Sarasota Crossings today at (941) 343-9777 to schedule an appointment with our experienced team of dentists in Sarasota.

Had an emergency visit! Made appointment on line and was seen very fast and was guided expertly thru what needed to be done. Very friendly and efficient office. UPDATE! So I now have had my root canal done! Dr Fredrick Nin was fabulous! He was so gentle and calming during the entire procedure. I just found out that he is not staying at this office. I hope that they bring him back even if it is only certain days of the week. And a few new staff members were nice to meet. As always Asia is great going to miss Nina:( I will update when i finish my crown!

I haven’t been to the dentist in over 20 years. Bad dentists in the past. Had a fear of them. I was welcomed in a very warm and kind way from front desk gal till the end of my procedure. Had a fear of extraction. If Nina wasn’t there guiding me through the process I wouldn’t have made it. Dr. Nin was fantastic too. Told me everything that he was doing. Very professional and compassionate people. Thank you Coast Dental for giving me the best services I have had in a long time. I Appreciate each one of you.
