Gum Disease

Did you know that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects half of American adults? This condition is prevalent in Clearwater, FL and is caused by bacteria that attack the tissues surrounding the teeth. The initial stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible with proper treatment.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, leading to bone loss around the teeth. As the bone tissue deteriorates, the gums detach from the teeth, forming pockets that create an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Without intervention, the infection worsens, causing loose teeth that may eventually fall out. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 years old in Clearwater.

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease in Clearwater. Some people may not experience any symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage. However, there are several indications to watch out for:

  • Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it is a warning sign of gum disease. It’s crucial to seek dental care promptly in Clearwater.
  • Bad breath: Plaque buildup between the teeth can result in bacteria that produce sulfur compounds, leading to persistent bad breath.
  • Redness, puffiness, or swelling of the gums: Inflammation is typically an early visible sign of infection, and our Clearwater dental experts can provide the necessary treatment.
  • Receding gums: If you notice that your teeth appear longer than before, it may be due to gum tissue recession, which exposes the tooth roots.
  • Sensitivity: Gum recession can cause sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Our dental team in Clearwater can help alleviate this discomfort.
  • Loose teeth: As gum disease progresses and leads to bone loss, the teeth can become loose Clearwater residents can rely on our dental professionals for appropriate treatment.

Fortunately, gum disease in Clearwater can be managed, although it cannot be fully reversed once it has advanced beyond gingivitis. Dentists in Clearwater, FL have various techniques to control and prevent further progression of the disease. Scaling, root planing, or debridement are cleaning techniques that remove plaque and bacteria beneath the gum line. In some cases, antibiotics or laser therapy may be recommended to eliminate the infection. Your general dentist may also refer you to a periodontist, a gum specialist, to explore surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

To prevent gum disease in Clearwater, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing diligently every day. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings every 3 to 6 months are crucial for maintaining periodontal health. These appointments allow our team to reach areas that may be difficult to clean with a toothbrush and floss alone.

If you suspect gum disease and reside in Clearwater, it is important to seek clinical treatment to address the infection. Contact Coast Dental Clearwater today at (727) 799-1010 to schedule an appointment with our experienced team of dentists in Clearwater.

Awesome treatment from the moment I walked thru the door! The office manager was both helpful and personable as well as professional. Very well balanced care. She made time for my questions and concerns. She navigated my insurance to give me the best schedule for the whole year to come. The oral care is top notch, I wouldn’t settle for any less. I received personal attention far above and beyond other local dental offices.

Amanda did an excellent job of explaining everything regarding what was going to be covered on my WellCare insurance and what would be out of pocket. I understand some people throw out negative reviews and only want to hear what they want to hear. I listened thoroughly and understood everything that was explained. Dr. Han Le was also helpful in further explanations regarding what I would need to have done. The receptionist was pleasant and office manager was helpful in my payment plan. This is what I have to say so far about Coast dental.

Very good experience - Dr Le in the Clearwater location, walked me through every procedure she did and showed consideration for me as her patient. This is important to me as my anxiety level was pretty high when I walked in. In no time at all she had me feeling relaxed enough to trust the work she was to undertake. Dr. Le is very good at what she does. She is an excellent dentist and anyone who uses her services will be considered lucky.. The staff is equally considerate of our needs which brings a good experience full circle.
