Gum Disease

Did you know that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects half of American adults? This condition is prevalent in Tampa, FL and is caused by bacteria that attack the tissues surrounding the teeth. The initial stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible with proper treatment.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, leading to bone loss around the teeth. As the bone tissue deteriorates, the gums detach from the teeth, forming pockets that create an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Without intervention, the infection worsens, causing loose teeth that may eventually fall out. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 years old in Tampa.

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease in Tampa. Some people may not experience any symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage. However, there are several indications to watch out for:

  • Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it is a warning sign of gum disease. It’s crucial to seek dental care promptly in Tampa.
  • Bad breath: Plaque buildup between the teeth can result in bacteria that produce sulfur compounds, leading to persistent bad breath.
  • Redness, puffiness, or swelling of the gums: Inflammation is typically an early visible sign of infection, and our Tampa dental experts can provide the necessary treatment.
  • Receding gums: If you notice that your teeth appear longer than before, it may be due to gum tissue recession, which exposes the tooth roots.
  • Sensitivity: Gum recession can cause sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Our dental team in Tampa can help alleviate this discomfort.
  • Loose teeth: As gum disease progresses and leads to bone loss, the teeth can become loose Tampa residents can rely on our dental professionals for appropriate treatment.

Fortunately, gum disease in Tampa can be managed, although it cannot be fully reversed once it has advanced beyond gingivitis. Dentists in Tampa, FL have various techniques to control and prevent further progression of the disease. Scaling, root planing, or debridement are cleaning techniques that remove plaque and bacteria beneath the gum line. In some cases, antibiotics or laser therapy may be recommended to eliminate the infection. Your general dentist may also refer you to a periodontist, a gum specialist, to explore surgical or non-surgical treatment options.

To prevent gum disease in Tampa, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing diligently every day. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings every 3 to 6 months are crucial for maintaining periodontal health. These appointments allow our team to reach areas that may be difficult to clean with a toothbrush and floss alone.

If you suspect gum disease and reside in Tampa, it is important to seek clinical treatment to address the infection. Contact Coast Dental South Tampa today at (813) 254-6838 to schedule an appointment with our experienced team of dentists in Tampa.

Amazing first visit at my new Dental Office - Coast Dental. Everyone I met was extremely friendly. The Customer Service was excellent. Big shout out to their office manager Courtney, for going above and beyond to help me with scheduling my son appointments. Thank you, Coast Dental Team!

I came here on my boyfriend’s recommendation and I’m glad I did. I feel so grateful to this office after my last dental procedure (done by another dentist at another office) left me with an oversized crown. From the start, Courtney was a sweetheart and took such good care of us. And Dr. Basily is a dentist wizard! She listened to all of my concerns, cast a spell with her drill wand, and now my bite finally feels normal again. She had a gentle hand and really focused on finding all the high points to make sure I no longer felt pain / pressure when biting. Leaving this review say thank you!!

Today was my 3rd cleaning here, and my second time with Jose cleaning my teeth, and I can say with enthusiasm that in my 42 years on earth Jose has given me the finest teeth cleanings of my adult life. I say “adult life” because I can’t remember my teeth cleanings as a child. In all honesty, they are probably the best cleanings of my life. It’s the first time I have ever wanted to return to a specific dental office, and had a specific person clean my teeth. His attention to detail, concern for my teeth and desire to do his job with courtesy, completeness, and professionalism are bar none. Jose Carmona Amador: the best. Five stars for Coast Dental. I am a very happy customer.

I had a very very good experience at this office. Jose was my hygienist and he was very thoughtful. He explained to me clearly and thoroughly what he was doing and why he was doing it. He ensured I felt comfortable and was not in pain during the procedure. I look forward to my following appointments in the future !
